Stuck In My Ruts

My bike gets a tune up every Spring. It’s a free feature at the shop I bought it from.

Free. I like that.

I call it her “annual,” but I don’t use that term at the shop- the guys there wouldn’t think it’s funny.

Have I told you that my bike has a name?

She’s Ida, as in “Ida rather be riding my bike!” Put a little George Burns voice to that, cigar and all. If you don’t understand that, look him up.

Before I take the old gal over, I need to give her a good scrub. I notice I didn’t do that before the end of last season. Her underside is atrocious! It’s very unlike me to let that go. As a nurse (retired), I operate on routines and the adage, “If you always do it the same way, then you’ll never miss a step.” I like routines. A creature of habit, I am. Here are a few of mine:

  • Love me some coffee first thing in the morning. We’re drinking Bulletproof these days. Black, nothing added to it.

  • Reading before bed.

  • I used to have the routine of weekly laundry, but now I do it about every 3-4 weeks (my husband does his own).

If I have enough underwear, which I do, I’m good to go!

  • Drinking 16 oz of water every 2-3 hours up until 5 pm.

  • I used to have the routine of washing my hair every day, but now I can let it go 2 or even 3 days. What a relief. I keep it basically all one length so I don’t have crazy “stick outs” as one of my sisters and I used to say when we were kids (my sisters read my newsletter; I wonder if the one I’m referring to will remember that).

  • Grocery shopping: Always Aldi first (love their produce), then Meijer and usually a trip over to Fresh Thyme at some point.

  • My new routine is getting rid of things in my home and not accumulating new stuff. Faithful readers will remember that I have had several BIG purges in recent years. Truly, I feel like I could do it again. Where in the world is all this stuff coming from? I’m trying hard not to look over at my husband as I write this. Well, what(who)ever is causing this, I’m committed to the routine of giving the house a good once over every month.

  • But on the QT, between you and me, if you could see my garage!

Oh. My. Gosh. Girl.

The man has every leftover screw from everything we have ever put together. And not just screws: hoses, tools, boxes, oddball parts…if I could get out of the house and into my car with my eyes closed, I would! Recently we’ve had a stray cat lurking around our house. My husband reminded me not to leave the garage door open as he didn’t want the cat setting up house in the garage. Oh honey, believe me, I have no intention of ever leaving our garage door open for all the world to see!

Ok enough about him, back to me.

  • My current fasting routine is 2–36-hour fasts/week. I love it. I stop eating Monday night and 6 pm and start eating again on Wednesday morning at 6 am (repeat Wednesday night/Thursday/Friday morning). I can’t believe the energy I have and for 2 whole days I don’t have to think about food. As you Intermittent Fasters know, if you fast you MUST feast (to a degree). I sure do love the day after the fast!

Email me if you want to know more about this.

Ok, enough about me, what about you?

What are some of your favorite routines? Email me and let me know. I’d love to hear!
